Jig & Fixture

What Are Jigs and Fixtures?

While often used interchangeably, jigs and fixtures serve different functions in manufacturing:

Jigs
• Guide cutting tools during machining (e.g., drilling, tapping, reaming)
• Common in one-dimensional operations
• Help ensure accurate hole positioning (e.g., drill bushings)
• Used primarily in manual machining or custom, low-volume parts
• Less common with CNC machines due to automated tool paths

Fixtures
• Secure and stabilize workpieces during operations (e.g., milling, turning, grinding)
• Essential in multi-dimensional processes and automation (e.g., car assembly lines)
• Include vises, clamps, and machine-mounted blocks
• Used in CNC machining, inspection systems, and assembly lines
